Funimation site links to an FAQ page on the topic, stating that it is indeed free to watch. Funimation calls it a “new era.” We find this confusing because Funimation had previously listed a donation page on its site. When we clicked it we were brought to $100/year donation form. The FAQ page states: “For a flat annual fee of $20.00, you receive the following rewards. Your name is displayed on the ‘Confetti’ page of our website for all future seasons of the Dragon Ball Super TV series.
Our marketing department will keep you in the loop of our marketing plans and activities and send you important updates to your email box
. We make an additional $3.00 donation for each Funimation Cast Video Channel Subscription you have (other channels and channels in our Vault); And for everyone who subscribes for Funimation Cast Premium (otherwise called ‘the Funimation Plus Premium Pass’), we make an additional $10.00 donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in your name.”
The FAQ page doesn’t clarify if this is a one-time charge or if Funimation is still making donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. If they are making them now, they aren’t done making them – but if they’re done, they likely won’t make them again in the future.
In other words,
Funimation is offering a video streaming service for free. But it’s not free to do so. We applaud Funimation for giving fans who want to watch new Dragon Ball
content something free. We just hope Funimation doesn’t shut out any longtime viewers.
Disclosure: These are our impressions based on how Funimation described its service on its own website. However, there is obviously still a lot to learn about the service.
